(The Church on the High Ground)
At the very heart of the oldest part of Leiden, as beautiful as it is imposing, stands the late-medieval town church: the Curch on the High Ground. In 1351 a chapel which was dedicated to St. Pancras was built on the "Raised Ground". The church assumed its contemporary form between 1380 and 1535, when it underwent several extensions. The Hooglandse Kerk is still a place where people come together. Naturally there are the regular Sunday morning services, but there are also the nationally famed Evensongs. Besides its religious function, the Hooglandse Kerk is also the place for (organ) concerts, exhibitions, symposia, congresses, events, receptions and the like. The expansive interior, with its elegant embellishments, can be divided. Also, there are three smaller venues, which are suitable for meetings up to 40 persons. All this makes the Hooglandse Kerk particularly suitable for events large and small.
