Leiden Fine painters

he name Leiden "Fine painters" was coined in the 19th century. This group of painters lived mostly in the 17th and 18th century. Famous and wellpaid painters from Holland and abroad belonged to the group. Many of these artists represent to aficionados 17th century painting. The school of Leiden fine painting began with Gerrit Dou around 1630. Fine painters tried to paint with extreme precision and detail. No wonder their works often were quite small.

The greatest of the fine painters was undoubtedly Frans van Mieris the Elder, who was almost as famous as his teacher Dou. His sons, Jan van Mieris and Willem van Mieris, followed in their father's footsteps and also belonged to the Leiden Fine Painters. Almost all fine painters belonged to the Guild of St. Luke. In 1694 the Leiden Academy for Drawing was established by Willem van Mieris, Jacob van Toorenvliet and Carel de Moor. Halfway into the 18th century Frans van Mieris the Younger was the last representative of "the school" of fine painters.

The period of the Leiden Fine Painters is highly regarded, both in Holland and abroad. Evidently not all painters are mentioned. The list of their names comprises approximately 30 names.
