Leiden Fine painters.... Gerrit Dou

errit Dou was born in Leiden on 7 april 1613. After working for a while in his father's studio, the fifteen year old son of a glass painter became a pupil of Rembrandt van Rijn. When this master's fame grew and he moved to Amsterdam Gerrit Dou could establish himself in Leiden as an independent artist. It was the start of a successful career. Gerrit Dou gave much attention to every detail of his paintings. Each square inch of his work seems to have cost many hours of work. Gerrit Dou had many imitators, many of them pupils.
Possibly Dou played a role in the foundation of the Guild of St. Luke. Gerrit Dou remained unmarried till his death in 1675. After his death he was buried in the Peter's Church in Leiden.
