Golden Age.... Lakenhal (Cloth Hall)

 he city's architect Arent van 's Gravesande built the Lakenhal in 1639. The board of the cloth industry had its seat there and this was where cloth was inspected before it was shipped all over the world. Over the gate a mill can be seen with piles of cloth on both sides. In the reliefs on the facades the different stages of cloth production are depicted, such as weaving and dyeing. The Lakenhal kept its original function till 1823. After that it was used, among other things, as a cholera hospital. In 1868 a municipal museum was established which still exists. The Lakenhal has a rich art coillection and an exhibition on the history of Leiden.
