Relief of the siege of Leiden.... Burgemeester Van der Werf  uring the siege starvation struck. Legend has it that mayor Van der Werf offered his right arm to the population to eat, rather than surrender. This story is apocryphal: the annals show that the mayor wanted to surrender but was overruled by the council. All the same, Van der Werf was given a statue. |
