Rembrandt.... Weddesteeg
embrandt was born in the Weddesteeg and lived there till 1632. The Van Rijn family had been around this area longer; his grandfather, an aunt and later on brothers and sisters all had a house here. On the righthand side of the Weddesteeg a heavy wall was situated, the inner wall of the city's defenses. The space in between was filled with earth. On top there were two mills, one of which was in the possession of Rembrandt's grandmother for a short while. After the Spaniards burned it down (Siege of Leiden) she rebuilt it in 1574. She sold it in 1575.
